SINGLE-USE PLASTIC BAN: ALTERNATIVES TO FLEX AND VINYLS
The Indian prime minister Narendra Modi took a step ahead to ban the use of single-use plastics, during his speech at India’s 73rd Independence Day, he encouraged the Indian public to stop using plastic materials in their daily chores. This speech against plastics earned a lot of support from even opposition parties, which shows that a wide-ranging agreement is in place against the use of single-use plastics used in all kind of industries around India.
There is no doubt that in everyday life, plastics might offer a temporary & low-cost advantage, but pollution caused by the same single-use plastics cannot be overlooked.
It is being claimed that with the current rate of plastic disposal by 2050, 12 billion tons of highly toxic plastic waste will be infused with our soil and water bodies, leading to an involuntary transfusion of plastic into food chains of animals, marine, and humans which is definitely not good for the community and environment at the whole.
Therefore, Narender Modi’s call for an immediate halt on single-use plastics is a complete resolution for the rising plastic pollution in India.
What are Single-use Plastics?
Single-use plastic — any plastic-based item that is disposed off once used and cannot be reused can be tagged as single-use plastic. Tamil Nadu in 2019 became the 4th state in India to ban single-use plastics; Maharashtra was the very first one to implement the ban, followed by Telangana and Himachal Pradesh. Now almost all states have curbed the use of plastic bags. However, it is often misunderstood that the use of single-use plastics is limited to creating poly bags, but that is not the case.
Single-use Plastics in Banner and Hoarding Industry
Two of the most widely used single-use plastics in India are Flex and Vinyl which is used in the outdoor advertising industry. Due to the cheap cost of production and maintenance flex and vinyl has been very widely used in banners, front-lit and back-lit displays, outdoor hoardings, retail shop boards, exhibitions display, etc.
With the ban on single used plastics, it is very likely using flex and vinyl material in advertising sector will be ceased very soon, leading to a huge gap between demand and supply for flex and vinyl.
Sun Fabric’s Eco-friendly Fabric Solutions: Eco-friendly Flex Substitute
Multiple organizations have tried to develop eco-friendly materials to replace flex, however very few have succeeded to do so.
